Aloha Fam! John Prime always holding it down with 808 URBAN as he instills values and great teaching in today’s youth. Last Year I was lucky enough to check out his art show at Loft In Space and got to hang out after-hours and chat it up with him. So much knowledge and respect goes out to John and his team for using their gifts and talents to inspire, evoke and help shape today’s youth and give back to our community. Our art, storefront, events, and volunteer projects promote group learning and collective action. Our focus on artistic development and innovation gives participants tools to become public voices for their communities. Through our 808 Urban arts programs: The Junior Board Initiative, The Community Murals Project, The Refuge, and HIstory Productions, we place particular emphasis on mentoring youth as a long term resolution to social transformation.
HOW 808 URBAN STARTED:
808 Urban began as a backyard project 6 years ago by graffiti artist John “Prime” Hina, who recognized the value of mentoring at-risk youth through graffiti arts and cultural education. Since then, 808 Urban has grown into a respected grassroots community arts organization, establishing our first Junior Boards and producing over 50 large-scale mural projects throughout Hawai’i.
808 Urban’s educational outreach component has offered over a hundred free arts workshops, and organized numerous free, educational urban arts events. Other notable accomplishments include: Ekahi – the Junior Board Waipahu Division’s first large-scale mural and community event; WaterWrites Hawai’i community mural project; 2011 Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle and HIstory Urban Arts Festival – in conjunction with the Honolulu Academy of Arts; Palama Settlement PUA project, Pow Wow Hawai’i; La Ho’i Ho’i ‘Ea; Children and Youth Day; Mana Maoli Hawaii Unite Festival; Girlfest Hawai’i; Career Day at Moanalua High School; Hawaiian Settlement Homestead projects, and more.
